The 2016 Cannondale SuperSix Evo Hi-Mod in Garmin-Cannondale team colours features Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, Mavic Cosmic wheels and Cannondale’s SiSL2 cranks. Thankfully, I was able to bring the full rig home to test out in less competitive conditions. The quick-release wheels are heavy and non-tubeless, and the cable routing is external.Although virtually all cyclocross bikes come set up as clinchers, the more progressive brands sell them with tubeless wheels so you’re only looking at tires (and perhaps rim strips and valve stems) before you have a race-ready machine. There’s nothing plastic-y here, and that’s much appreciated.Note the particularly bulbous hoods that hide the brake fluid reservoirI’m doing my best to save a discussion of the frameset for last, because truly it’s the best part of the whole bike. I checked my tires twice the first time I rode this bike on a cyclocross course.Cannondale engineers have done an admirable job with carbon road frames recently; the Synapse is perhaps the plushest endurance bike I’ve ridden recently, and the SuperSix is a coiled spring of a race machine. The wheels, in contrast to the frame and 105 gruppo, are duds. If it came with good tubeless wheels it would be a five-star machine. Also, the traditional horizontal top tube combines with the extended seat tube collar to leaves very little seatpost exposed – at least for riders like me with relatively short legs. Cannondale has totally redesigned the SuperX for 2017, with the new frame incorporating technology from its road and mountain bikes. I like the Fabric Spoon Shallow Elite saddle. The BB30 bottom bracket is low and does have some lateral flex that’s noticeable when being pushed hard. No promises, but we'll see if we can dig up the information you're looking for. Again, we’ll talk about that in a bit.The BR785 hydraulic disc brakes with 160mm rotors shown throughout the test. The rest of the cockpit is unremarkable, with alloy house-brand stem, bar and seatpost doing their respective jobs without distinction, positive or negative.To sum it up, the star of the show is the frameset, which basically acts like a soft tail, complemented handily by Shimano’s hydraulic brakes and dependable 105 drivetrain. Although saddles are a matter of personal preference, I already know I won't swap it out for any of the test rides.The chainstays of the SuperX are 430mm long.
That said, with the Shimano 105 and SRAM Rival coming in at a pricepoint that is at least reasonable, the SuperX is accessible to all sorts of riders. I absolutely will. Cannondale’s Hi-MOD carbon belongs exclusively to the SuperX Hi-MOD CX1 model, which comes with a pricetag of $5330, putting it in the super bike category for those who spare no expense. The result is a big, roomy front triangle that gives you lots of room to maneuver during carries. They permit hard, last-minute braking and manage heat effectively on long descents (not usually a big problem in cyclocross races, but gravel grinders will appreciate this). Cannondale carries the flag forward. I think I cleaned the chain once and re-lubed it two or three times over the last nine months; it never saw a mechanic’s wrench once until the frame was replaced late in the test period.
We don’t normally get so much time on a bike before the review comes due, and this was partly due to some issues with the headset which I’ll discuss soon.
