A meticulously researched and written history of a challenging area of the world which should be celebrated.Almost ashamed to admit how ignorant I am of Eastern European history so I've been working steadily on correcting that. The author starts in a distant past, when the inhabitants of the area were few and reasonably uniform and relates an ever more complex story that sees the 'locals' divided among themselves by culture. I see Ukraine very differently now. I moved this book up on my queue when I read a recent review in the Economist. That is what I wanted to read, and I was satisfied by it. Aside from this error, The Gates of Europe is an indispensable and scholarly guide to the tragic history of a great European nation. Ukraine is in the headlines as it fights to protect itself from yet another invasion from Russia. So honesty and scientific rigor are the only qualities that can save such a project from drowning in hybrid poisons. This book gives an excellent history of Ukraine from its very beginning.
