There is a lot of rocks on the trail, so you do have to watch your footing. We started around noon, and got back right about 5. After the trail split, Thomas Lakes Trail climbs through Aspen trees and open meadows for ~2mi. Don’t forget bug spray!!! Directions from Carbondale: From Carbondale travel south on Hwy. Go to 2nd lake for easy access and a dip.Beautiful hike, a first in terms of length and elevation increase, however it was gradual so it didn’t feel too challenging. Also you can camp on the trail according to the signs, just not within 1/4 mile of the lake. Take a right at the fork and follow it for 2 miles.

I wanted to hike Mt. Make a left turn on Prince Creek Road and go about 6 miles to the fork in the road. A bit exposed in places so a hat/sunglasses + sunscreen could be in order!
Thomas Lakes Trail heads west off of Hay Park Trail at the southern end of a meadow around 1.75 miles from the start toward the Mount Sopris Trail. Did this trail on the 3rd and it's beautiful! In this span, the trail crosses Prince Creek twice before finally reaching Thomas Lakes. As it says in other reviews, it is best to start early because the trail is <50% in the shade and it can get hot. Thomas Lakes Trail #1958 is an intermediate/moderate trail you can hike that is dog friendly. Lots of incline and rocky trail but so worth it at the end.This trail was relatively easy up to the lakes! We were up and down in about 4.5 hours, an hour of which was spent at the lake.Beautiful views!! If you're from the midwest, the bugs aren't an issue lol. (i got to trailhead @10:15) there is a creek near the top where your pups can drink but if hiking in summer i’d recommend A LOT of water.

There's plenty of good places to camp on the trail if you choose to do so. It was the perfect distance for a beginner hike, and with a good payoff at the end (the lake). Good, moderately difficult day hike, but not the best. Steady incline throughout the trail with steeper parts. Wonderful views, summer conditions.
