The exhibition sets the scene for these family portraits by including landscapes of places, such as Tangier in North Africa, which Lavery visited many times.He painted at the village of Grès-sur-Loing before returning to Scotland with Alexander Roche. They, and some fellow artists, achieved success as the so-called "Glasgow boys," but Lavery soon moved on to London where he became a fashionable portrait painter with a studio at 5, Cromwell Place and a house in Tangier. Two works depicting the tennis courts date from these holidays, both painted from similar vantage points. In 1881 he attended the Academie Julian in Paris, and, on a visit to Grez three years later, was influenced by the work of Frank O'Meara and other 'plein air' painters who worked there.
