The country is tearing itself apart while the world watches.This isn’t the introduction to a book. Instead, we must all resolve to use our privilege for good.
Black lives matter, as do all lives. This journey took me further into areas of social justice.
White America, it is time for us to stand up and take a stand against injustice.My route home from work takes me in front of The White House every day, and on Friday as I walked by, I found myself in a Black Lives Matter march that ended in front of our President's home.
Good. Our role in fighting for Black Lives is critical - if Black America could have solved this without White Americans, they already would have. What BIPOC and allies alike ask is that white people stop ignoring or denying the system while simultaneously benefiting from it. I felt an uncomfortable shame to be part of the race causing such injustice to those who have historically been "othered" by our race.
It’s my job and what I do, but it’s also so much of who I am. Have critical and difficult conversations with the people we love - especially those that have not been vocal. But overcoming, pushing forward, not living in a world with the senseless tragedy that has so rocked us this week, requires each and every one of us to acknowledge the role we can play in doing so. This morning, here in Minneapolis, six jurors decided beyond a reasonable doubt that I am guilty as charged and my co-defendant, Dan Wilson was found innocent. I know I still have a lot that I need to learn. But neither is silence. The White Silence Equals White Consent message serves as a call to arms to white bystanders who are silent and do not stand up as allies to prove themselves as people who do not condone police brutality towards black people.
We cannot stay silent, because silence is acceptance.
One in particular has stood out to me. Speak to other white people about their privilege. But that desire - to hide from what is uncomfortable and wrong - is exactly the problem. Whiteness is, like it or not, an asset that we can and should use to promote equitable change.
